Street Photography: Passing Through: Motion and Stillness in Urban Life Meetup

Street Photography: Passing Through: Motion and Stillness in Urban Life Meetup

Saturday 28 June
Durham City - 12pm - 2 Hours
Nick Small
This conceptual session focuses on photographing the contrast between the movement of people and the stillness of the built environment. Using long exposure techniques in daylight, we'll create images that blur passersby into ghostly trails while static elements remain crisp and defined.

Great for photographers eager to experiment with motion blur and storytelling through stillness. Bring a tripod or a stable surface option and consider ND filters or DIY darkening methods if conditions are bright. Manual settings and patience will be key to capturing the subtle poetry of everyday life.

Another superb photography meet-up with Georgios to work through getting the most from macro photography. The day was sunny, but freezing cold with thick snow - we were able to make use of the snow and ice crystals to get some great shots! Yay! Really looking forward to the next events.

It was a good walk around Durham with a knowledgeable tutor who's clearly enthusiastic about architecture photography, and I learned several things, including one especially good tip. I'd happily join another of Jake's classes.

It was an amazing introduction to photography. Jake was so knowledgeable and was generous in sharing this knowledge in a way that encouraged me to have a go and believe in myself. We were able to explore the best options for different light, close up pictures, composition and much more. I left feeling inspired and motivated to do more with my camera. I can't thank Jake enough for a fantastic course

    Nick Small
Nick believes its important to listen and collaborate closely with fellow photographers when working together. In doing this he can gain an understanding of an individuals skill and what techniques they could use to build upon existing knowledge to illustrate their photographic style either in an environment, event or just for personal expression . He feels communication through the image shows the feel and expression of the creative photographer.
Having initially tutored creative design in the education sector for over twelve years Nick found the calling to return fully to his passion photography. Exhibiting his work in restaurants, hotels, through printed media and curated exhibitions as well as working with live client's, he felt the calling to return to the North of England which strengthened his creative goals . After eight years its still there and always growing. With his co-photographers he likes to move forward to find fresh visual perspectives and sees photographic work as a joint venture to gain the appropriate solution for all.
As he says... walk with me and create.

We often overlook the detail that is above or below our usual line of sight so this image illustrates the angles that I find in architecture taken from a worms eye view. The contrasts formed by the light emphasise the structure and the angles and these were made even more prominent by the tilt on the camera which helped create a sense of drama or even unease as the building seems to be at an uncomfortable perspective.
