Whether you're brand new to photography or an enthusiastic amateur, this relaxed walk is designed to help you master your camera and explore the beauty of Jesmond Dene in winter.
You will learn how to set and use your new camera with hands-on guidance, begin to understand the fundamentals of how ISO, aperture and shutter speed work together to create well-exposed images, and discover some of the best photography spots in Jesmond Dene, including a stop at the iconic Armstrong Waterfalls for an opportunity to try long exposure photography to capture that milky water effect.
We’ll meet at the Jesmond Dene Visitor Centre and finish the walk at the iconic waterfalls. A sturdy tripod is recommended for long exposure shots, but don’t worry if you don’t have one—Jenny will have a tripod available to borrow (just be prepared to wait your turn!).

Come along to our photo sessions to dust off your camera and get snap-happy with a professional photography instructor.

Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations in Durham .

  • New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month. And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

  • Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

  • What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

    The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

    It was an amazing introduction to photography. Jake was so knowledgeable and was generous in sharing this knowledge in a way that encouraged me to have a go and believe in myself. We were able to explore the best options for different light, close up pictures, composition and much more. I left feeling inspired and motivated to do more with my camera. I can't thank Jake enough for a fantastic course

    Found a new lens on eBay for a snip!....A Chinese Kaxinda 14mm f3.5.This was literally the first frame with it.The light was perfect and she was in her favourite place.....on my Son's bed.Very sharp and excellent colour and contrast......not at all bad for ?40!Definitely a keeper.....

    photo taken in Edinburgh in one of the city parks, I was visiting with the intention of taking a few photos on the autumn theme. The photographic equipment used was a canon eos 7D mark 2 and a Canon EF 70 - 300 mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM lens. I took the photo from the ground to capture the right angle of view and perspectives, significantly reflecting the dynamics of the shot.
